This American Elm was removed because the homeowner decided to build a new garage in its place. Were it farther from the power lines, the homeowner might have kept it instead.
This is the same tree in early June when we removed it.
We used ropes to help pull the limbs away from the lines during removal.

This American Elm was topped (had all of its branches removed mid-stem) roughly 20 years ago, so we removed it because of the excessive decay & multiple branch failures.

The front branches are removed so Nathan will work on lowering the rear branches that are over the neighbours house next.
Because the branches are over houses, each branch must be carefully lowered using ropes.

Almost all of the branches are now removed and so the stem can now be slowly lowered down.
An old topping cut. Pruning should be carefully done so that cuts are taken to branches large enough to support the stem. Mid-stem cuts like this result in long vertical columns of decay.
This branch is slowly healing over the decayed wood, but the dead material will remain within the stem forever.
A side effect of topping cuts is that the tree quickly regrows sprouts, making the problem worse. Further, the sprouts originate from the same part of the stem making them weaker than what was there before.
Nathan is cutting to lower the stem down in pieces small enough to control with ropes.

Deadwooding on an American Elm. Elm pruning season is from October 1st to March 31st.
This Weeping (Silver) Birch was removed due to severe bronze birch borer damage. If you have a birch, consider improving the root health by decreasing the amount of heat around the root soil or performing systemic trunk injections in order to control the beetles.
One of our groundsman clears out the brush as the climber works.
The black marks in the wood are the frass left behind by the beetle larvae as they chew through the wood. As the beetles burrow through the wood's conductive tissue, they prevent the tree from sending water and nutrients to the branches, causing dieback.
Nathan is taking out a limb in manageable chunks to avoid damaging the homeowner's roof.

This pine was beautiful, but was removed as the homeowner wanted a change in his front yard's landscape.
Our team is equipped with equipment to quickly and effectively manage with brush generated from the work.
A "crash pad" of branches was purposefully left on the drive during removal to prevent damage to the surface during tree felling.
All wood was stacked neatly for the homeowner to use as firewood. For this job, we were required to avoid damaging the electrical post during felling.
We also removed a large silver maple that was infested with bronzed birch borer in the backyard. This massive Russian Olive had a branch failure that was safely lowered down, but thankfully the tree only needed pruning.
The homeowners recently moved into this new home and were looking to remove this spruce from the front yard.
In the previous photo, these multiple stems are nearly invisible, but are clear once the branches are removed. Generally, conifers with multiple trunks are at higher risk of failure, and should be inspected to determine their level of risk. As this tree grew, eventually this web of trunks would have become unstable.
This spruce has a great structure, with a single stem, however the homeowners were looking to build some structures in the backyard where the tree was.
Look at the beautiful root system coming out of this spruce. While it certainly makes mowing difficult, it is does contain some wild charm. Generally, the start of these large roots called buttresses (pictured just below the cut portion of the trunk) should be slightly visible on a properly planted tree. Strong winds make these buttresses quite prominent.
These trees were cleaned of deadwood and then cabled.
These two trunks were secured with a cabling system following deadwooding.

With a trunk this size, the cables must be rated to meet the strength requirements of the industry standards (ANSI A300).
The bolts for this system were drilled all the way through the trunk and secured on the opposite side. Over time, the tree will heal and seal off the hole as it puts on new wood.
This trunk defect is known as a bark inclusion. Bark inclusions are formed when the trunks grow without separation. Over time, the wood grows into each other and decays as the result of trapped moisture. These defects are severe.
The cable is taut, but still loose enough to allow movement. These systems add extra support, but DO NOT eliminate the baseline level of risk associated with the trees. Instead, they act as mitigation tools to help keep higher risk trees in the landscape for longer than they would otherwise be.
